Twitch VOD Muted Audio: Why It Happens and How to Fix It

You check your VOD after a great stream and there it is: the dreaded grey segment — 30 minutes of silence where your best moments used to have sound. Here’s exactly why Twitch mutes VOD audio, what you can and can’t do about it, and the related audio problem streamers hit when VODs travel to YouTube.

Why Twitch mutes your VODs

Twitch scans VODs with audio-recognition (an Audible Magic system) for copyrighted music. When it matches a track, it mutes the entire affected segment — typically in blocks around 30 minutes — in the recorded VOD. Key facts:

• It’s music detection, not profanity detection. Twitch does not mute VODs for swearing.
• Live streams aren’t muted — only the recorded VOD after the fact.
• Muting is per-segment, not per-song: one Spotify track in your break screen can silence half an hour of gameplay commentary.
• There’s no un-mute appeal unless the match was a false positive or you hold the rights.

Avoiding the mute

1. Kill background music you don’t have rights to — the obvious one, and still the most common cause via game menus, in-game radio stations, and break screens.
2. Use cleared music: Twitch’s Soundtrack tool (which separates music from the VOD track), StreamBeats, Pretzel, Epidemic Sound (with license), or DMCA-safe playlists.
3. Separate your audio tracks in OBS: put music on its own track excluded from the VOD/recording. This is the pro move — the live audience hears music, the VOD doesn’t contain it at all.
4. Careful with in-game licensed radio (GTA, racing games): mute in-game music in settings when VODs matter.

The other audio problem: your VODs on YouTube
